Woo The Verreaux Eagle Owl

Samatian’s resident Verreaux Eagle Owl, named Woo is still very much on the scene and he will often sit next to guests by the pool and has taken to perching on the bird table outside the mess in the evenings – much to the annoyance to the Northern Masked Weaver population.

Woo was rescued as a fledgling when the tree his nest was in was cut down for charcoal. He has a varied diet that has recently included an egret, a Nile Monitor lizard and lots of spiny mice. At night he can sometimes be heard ‘wooing’ other Verreaux Eagle Owls on the mainland but he has yet to make the short flight over there.
